Breath-based Meditation
From overwhelm to empowerment
Sunday, April 26th | 7:00pm ET | Donation-based | via Zoom
About this session
The goal of this 60-minute Sanctuary is to release the overwhelm and reconnect to personal sovereignty and empowerment.
This Sanctuary will focus on breath patterns and somatic practices to release overwhelm and reconnect with our confidence, conviction, power, presence, and openness.
Are you going to feel fully empowered and ready to take on the world after one Sanctuary? Maybe not. Maybe. But, the goal is to at least start the path toward reconnection with your body and building presence. Feeling self-assured and empowered often comes with embodiment, presence, and self-trust. We’ll try to deepen our relationship in these areas using our breath, movement, and guided visualizations.
We’ll use more moderate-level breath techniques with extended holds. Light stretching, self-massage, and visualizations will also be woven into the flow to help you reconnect with your body and discharge overwhelming sensations and energy.
This Sanctuary is a donation-based session. You’ll receive a link after you register to make a donation, if you would like to and are able to.
What to expect?
If this is your first breathwork session, you can expect a lot of breathing. You will be guided through elongated breaths, rapid and slow breathing patterns, extended holds, and different patterns to change your present physiological state (e.g. nervous system state, brainwave state, heart rate variability, hormone levels, etc.)
Some experiences that are normal: tingling in the hands, face, and feet is common, as we move blood to our core. Feeling a change in temperature and light-headedness can occur as well. Many people feel colder during a session, especially in their extremities. Spontaneous release of emotions (crying, laughing, somatic shaking) is also normal in response to controlled breathing. If you feel dizzy or overwhelmed at any time during the session, that is your body’s queue to return to slow, normal breathing.

You can choose how long to hold based on your capacity and what is right for you. I will guide holds that last 5, 10, and 20 seconds.
-
Slow down, take deep belly breaths at a restorative pace. And, then follow a gentle, normal breath pattern for the rest of class. Have some water close by to help hydrate and ground you.
Stay connected to your body’s queues, such as light-headedness, to determine if you are pushing pas your body’s limits. Typically, lightheadness can occur with rapid inhales and exhales, as well as extended holds. You many skip these as part of your practice.
